OnTracktoRio- Roy Ejiaku

After looking last week at Sale Harrier athlete Andy Robertson, Tracktics discovered that there is Sprint storm coming from SportCity in Manchester..
As we spoke to 200 metre Great Britain Junior Roy Ejiaku.

The Sale Harrier talks about juggling his final year at A levels with his Track life and on how he doesn't plan to stop until he hits the top!

Best of Britain: Ejiaku taking Gold at the Celtic International Cup

Tracktics: Roy thank you for taking part in our feature OnTracktoRio! Tell our readers a bit about yourself?

Hi Guys I’m an 18 year old 200 meter runner and I have been involved with the sport since I was eleven! Being in year 13 i have to balance my Track life with my work so most of the time it is spent revising or running training up to 7 times a week!

Tracktics: What have you achieved on the Track in the so many years you have been involved with the sport and what do you see as your greatest achievement?
In the seven years I have been a track runner I have won some of the biggest junior title in the country. English schools title, the indoor 3A's. I have also been the northern champion for the 200M in 2011 and 12 winning the 60metres this year and last!

I have had so many great achievements I have been invited to the Olympic trials also came 2nd in the 200 meter’s in the European trials in 2012 representing my country also has to be up there in the 4 by 100 meter relay at the Loughborough international in 2012 and also England in the Celtic international cup a cup based on emerging talent, I won the 200 and relay.

Tracktics: At only the age of 18 do you see Rio as an aim in your career? and if so what would be a realistic aim?

I think at the age of 18 I have a lot to work towards but Rio 2016 is the aim. I will be 21 and I should be ready for it though I still have along way to go before that such as the European juniors this year and so on.

Tracktics: What do you do outside of the Track?

Outside the track I am in college and spend most of my time working and revising towards finishing my A2's which are Accounting, Law and Psychology. After my A levels I hope to stay close to home and go to Manchester Metropolitan University .Like most 18 year olds i like to chill with my friends too.

Tracktics: What would you say makes you different from other athletes that has got you to the standard you are today?

I think determination and motivation combined in me, cause i wonder why i get up at daft hours in the morning to train for college. I realise i just have a pure passion for the sport and i am determined to succeed.

Tracktics: Who has been your idol on the Track and how have they inspired you?

My idol on the track would have to be Tyson Gay and Kim Collins. Tyson Gay because he shows that after being defeated and having a massive injury, he picks himself up and gets right back and trains he just doesn’t stop. Also Kim Collins because he shows age doesn’t stop a person and still going strong. Both key skills on to me succeeding in the sport!

Tracktics: How would you improve the sport of Athletics to appeal to more people?
I think the only way to improve athletics is to make it available to more people as not many families can afford to pay for training frequently this means making facilities and the equipment at a cheaper price for people. Also to provide funding to upcoming talented athletes

Tracktics: Finally if there a was message to upcoming athletes you could give what would it be?

For all upcoming athletes never forget your ambitions.

The futures bright: Ejiaku is here for Rio and beyond
